About this piece
This abstract silk velvet lumbar pillow sets cobalt blue, turquoise and burnt orange against cream in broad geometric stripes and blocks. The surface catches light with a subtle sheen, while the plush pile gives each color a softened edge. Its 16 x 24 inch lumbar format brings a horizontal focal point to tailored upholstery, where the saturated palette can shape the room's accent colors without overwhelming the larger composition.
The pattern shifts between strong bands and compact blocks, creating a graphic rhythm that reads clearly from across a room. Cobalt blue anchors the composition, turquoise brings a cool aquatic note, and burnt orange with rust supplies the warmth. Light blue and cream keep the arrangement open. Run a hand across the velvet and the pile changes direction, producing gentle tonal movement across the stripes.
The front is silk velvet woven in Turkey, and the back is linen. The velvet is organic vegetable-dyed, with a finish that allows its color and texture to remain central. A hidden zipper keeps the closure discreet. Each piece is handmade, sewn and finished in our California atelier.
At 16 x 24 inches (40 x 60 cm), the lumbar proportion supports the lower back of a lounge chair or the center of a sofa arrangement. A premium down feather insert is included, giving the pillow a substantial hand and allowing a controlled karate-chop finish when styled for photography.

Interior Designer's Styling Notes
Use this lumbar as the color bridge between cool upholstery and warmer architectural finishes. On a cream bouclé sofa, place one at the center and flank it with solid ivory or deep teal pillows, keeping the surrounding forms quiet so the stripe structure remains legible. In a staged living room, angle the velvet slightly toward the camera rather than placing it flat, allowing the sheen to register in listing photographs.
The horizontal scale works especially well in front of larger square pillows, where it creates a clear second layer instead of competing with the sofa's silhouette. Pair it with walnut, pale oak or oxidized bronze nearby, since those materials reinforce the burnt orange and rust without introducing another strong print. For a reading chair, use one lumbar alone and leave the seat perimeter visible, preserving the tailored line of the upholstery.
Best Interior Styles
- Contemporary Glam: saturated cobalt and turquoise gain polish from velvet sheen and the design's disciplined geometric blocks
- Mid-Century Modern: horizontal lumbar scale and burnt orange accents echo the era's graphic upholstery language
- Modern Classic: cream grounds the vivid stripes, making the pillow a controlled accent within tailored symmetry
- Curated Maximalism: layered color blocks provide a confident focal point without relying on a dense ornamental motif
Sofa & Fabric Pairings
- Cream bouclé sofa: its nubby surface contrasts with the velvet's directional pile and vivid stripes
- Deep teal linen sofa: repeats the cool palette while letting cobalt and turquoise remain distinct
- Rust velvet chair: draws out the warm blocks and gives the composition a tonal anchor
- Oatmeal wool upholstery: provides a restrained field for the graphic pattern and sheen
- Ivory performance linen: keeps the cream sections bright and the colors visually separated
Color Palette
- Coastal Ember: cobalt blue, turquoise, burnt orange, rust, cream
- Gallery Current: cobalt blue, light blue, turquoise, rust, soft ivory
Because each piece is handmade and finished individually, slight shifts in color saturation and pile texture ensure that no two pillows are exactly alike.
